French President Nicolas Sarkozy has conceded the presidential election to Socialist challenger Francois Hollande.

Mr. Hollande is set to become the nation’s first left-wing president since Francois Mitterrand left office in 1995.

With the loss, Mr. Sarkozy becomes the latest of at least half a dozen European leaders swept from office during the eurozone economic crisis.

Concerns over the economy, unemployment, and immigration have been at the forefront of the French election. France is a key player in plans to lead the eurozone out of its debt crisis.

Exit polls from the French presidential elections show Socialist candidate Francois Hollande with 28.4% of the vote and President Nicolas Sarkozy with 25.5%.

A presidential candidate must receive more than 50% of the vote to win. If no one claims a majority, the top two vote-getters advance to a second round of voting.

Other candidates are Jean-Luc Melenchon on the extreme left with 11.7%, Marine Le Pen on the extreme right with 20%, and centrist Francois Bayrou with 8.5%.
