Between fifty and seventy people are missing after a cruise ship ran aground off the coast of Italy, prompting a mass evacuation.

Three people are dead, and twenty are injured.

The Costa Concordia, owned by Genoa-based Costa Cruises, ran aground Friday night on a sand bank off the island Giglio.

Three helicopters were used to rescue some passengers from the ship, which pictures show listing heavily to one side.

Most of those on board were Italian; there were also some French and German citizens.

The captain has been arrested. He is being investigated for manslaughter and abandoning ship.
