Speaker Boehner Challenges President Obama on Libya

This week, Speaker of the House John Boehner made public a letter in which he asked President Obama to explain what he hoped to achieve with military intervention in Libya.

He criticized the President for failing to get Congressional approval before taking military action. He further suggested that Pres. Obama consulted more closely in his decision with the Arab League and the United Nations than he did with the United States Congress.

Earlier in the week, Boehner took a different view, saying that America had a “moral obligation” to help the opponents of Muammar el-Qaddafi.

Last month, Speaker of the House John Boehner told the new Congress, “The people voted to end business as usual, and today we begin to carry out their instructions.”

Well, Mr. Speaker, according to a USA Today/Gallup poll, here are some of the people’s instructions:

  • Pass an energy bill that provides incentives for using solar and other alternative energy sources (83% of those polled were in favor)
  • Overhaul the federal tax code (76% of those polled were in favor)
  • Withdraw U.S. troops from Afghanistan (72% of those polled were in favor)

When can we expect you to begin?

Republicans Make Good on Promise to Waste Time, Vote to Repeal Health Care

President Barack Obama's signature on the heal...

Image via Wikipedia

The now Republican-led House of Representatives passed a bill that would repeal President Barack Obama’s health care reform law on Wednesday. It’s an entirely symbolic move that won’t go anywhere.

The bill also needs Senate passage but won’t get it, because the Senate remains under Democratic control. However, even if the Senate were to pass the measure (it won’t), President Obama would veto it.

Republican leaders say they made this vote because it was one of their campaign promises. Never mind that it just wasted a bunch of time and the taxpayers’ money, which is one thing they’re always squawking about.

“Our pledge was to repeal Obamacare,” said Speaker of the House John Boehner, using the absurd Republican nickname for the health care bill. After all, 219 members of the House and 60 Senators voted to pass the bill.

A new poll shows that just 18% of Americans favor repeal of the health care law.
