The current budget brokered by House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Senate Budget Committee Chairwoman Patty Murray (D-Wash.) is up for a vote today. It will be interesting to see if it passes both houses.
Giving more tax break to the rich and cutting subsidies for the underemployed and poor seems to be a bipartisan effort these days.
This is disgusting.

From Ms. Magazine (http://msmagazine.com/blog/2013/08/12/gloria-steinem-to-be-awarded-presidential-medal-of-freedom/)
President Barack Obama announced on Thursday that writer and feminist activist Gloria Steinem, cofounder of Ms. magazine, will be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States, later this year. She joins nearly 600 distinguished people who have won the award since it was established in 1963. According to the White House, Steinem was awarded the medal for her women’s rights activism. When he announced this year’s winners, Obama said:
The Presidential Medal of Freedom goes to men and women who have dedicated their own lives to enriching ours. This year’s honorees have been blessed with extraordinary talent, but what sets them apart is their gift for sharing that talent with the world. It will be my honor to present them with a token of our nation’s gratitude.
Four other of this year’s honorees are women: astronaut/science educator Sally Ride, multi-media entrepreneur and talk-show host Oprah Winfrey, country singer/songwriter Loretta Lynn, glass-ceiling-breaking judge Patricia Wald.

Feminism seems to be in the news a lot. Now Gloria Steinem as well as others are going to awarded by President Obama. I have met Gloria Steinem at Chatauqua Institute in New York. It is the oldest gated community in America. Chautauqua is a community of picturesque Victorian homes. It has a “season” and speakers come form all over the world to be able to speak to the thousands who attend. They have an Open Air Ampitheater on Lake Chautauqua.
Well done, Illinois!

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (CBS) — Illinois is poised to become the 15th state to legalize same-sex marriage as both the House and Senate passed the Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act.
The bill will become law once it has been signed by Governor Pat Quinn, which he has promised to do.
CBS 2’s Jay Levine was at the State Capitol for the historic vote and reports there were tears of joy for some and deep disappointment for others.

The Taliban has long personified the ignorance and intolerance found among religious extremists. Indeed, they first attracted international attention with their destruction of the famous giant Buddhas of Bamiyan. However, it is always impressive to see the degree to which its Islamic beliefs seem to produce uniformly harmful impacts on the populations under its cruel control. A report last week documented how there is a serious polio outbreak that is threatening global progress against the disease. The Taliban has denounced vaccinations as a Western plot and threatened anyone who receives one. It is a tragic irony since the disease has long been the scourge of the Middle East going back to ancient times, as this Egyptian tablet from the 18th Dynasty (1403–1365 BC) reflects. The ancient populations could only dream of a cure but, now that one is available, the Taliban again seeks to force its areas back into the dark ages.

The international band of Internet activists known as Anonymous has chosen the rural Missouri town of Maryville as the target of its latest campaign, after the Kansas City Star published a powerful examination of a possible rape case that went unprosecuted by local authorities.
Known for successful hacks of organizations ranging from the Church of Scientology to PayPal to the government of Brazil, Anonymous released a statement on Monday in which a synthesized voice warns Mayor Jim Fall and other officials to “expect us.”
“If Maryville won’t defend these young girls, if the police are too cowardly or corrupt to do their jobs, if justice system has abandoned them, then we will have to stand for them,” the voice declares, according to the text of the statement.
